Dr Molapo Qhobela
A seasoned leader in education, science and technology, with over 33 years of professional experience. Dr Qhobela holds a BSc from the University of Zimbabwe and a PhD from Kansas State University in the United States. He is a citizen of South Africa with deep professional and personal roots on the African continent.

Dr Qhobela has strong connections with a range of pan African institutions and initiatives such as the African Academies of Sciences, the Council for the Development of Social Sciences in Africa (CODESRIA), the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), the African Open Science Platform (OASP) and the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The vision of the founding members and of the AU is that of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the coming successors to the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2024 (STISA-2024) and Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) will continue to guide the work of the Commissioner for ESTI.

Dr Qhobela has over 33 years of professional experience in higher education, research, science and technology. This experience includes his current position and previous academic experience and as a senior executive in Government. His knowledge of the African and international education and higher education and research system is deep and extensive. He has proven ability to lead and manage large and complex organizations with dexterity and diplomacy. Equally, he has strong governance credentials having served and led several governing Boards. Dr Qhobela has also established an extensive network of contacts and partnerships locally and internationally in the knowledge industry.
